Strong molding profiles inspired by ancient Greek buildings were used in this award-winning home. These molding profiles that were popular in the 1800s blend seamlessly with modern sensibilities through the classical trim details, beaded casing, beadboard, and shiplap. A bedroom oasis sets the tone for this home, with walls trimmed in WindsorONE 1×8 Shiplap, Flat Stock and Greek Revival molding details. Contemporary art, light fixture and curtains nicely balance out traditional elements.
AN AWARD WINNING HOME
The aim of this project was “not to copy the past, but to honor it.” An amazing collaboration by architect C. Brandon Ingram, Designer Alex Adamson and Builders Groves Homes; Founded by Jaeson Roundy and Greg Winder joining the team later as managing partner. The home brings elements of Southern charm while nestled in the Utah Valley. As a part of honoring the tradition of craftsmanship, they consulted with Historical Millwork expert Brent Hull, a master builder and designer of the WindsorONE Classic American Molding Collection. With this dream team, the result was a stunning home and winner of the Judges Choice Award of Utah Valley’s Parade of Homes.

The shiplap lines on the wall create the perfect textural contrast; Precise architectural lines of vertical shiplap and historic trim against the soft lines of bedding and window treatments. It all makes the primary bedroom a real retreat.

BRINGING HEALTHY NATURAL MATERIALS INTO THE HOME

A sweet little privacy hedge outside the bedroom window helps brings nature in. Looking for another way to bring nature into the home? Make smart choices in materials like primed wood by WindsorONE in lieu of other substrates that may have preservatives and resins in them. Also worth noting all WindsorONE products have a Gold Indoor Air Quality Rating and no harmful off-gassing.
Loving the shiplap paneling in those stiles and rails that line up with the windows; it’s details like this that make the home.
USING GREEK REVIVAL AND WAINSCOTING TO DEFINE AN OPEN CONCEPT SPACE

Trim when used correctly, accentuates or simply just helps define architectural elements of a space. Above is a great example of trim being used to bring definition between the living and dining rooms in this open concept spaces. The Greek Revival trim profiles beautifully draw a frame around these well-composed spaces. The dining room gets it’s own treatment with the stiles and rails wainscoting and the blue woven texture wall covering. The dining room, while related, still gets its own unique treatment; box beams on the ceilings with a more neutral palette. With French doors letting light pour into both rooms, the play of light and shadow on the trim helps transform the room throughout the day. What a great space to entertain in!
HOW A BOX BEAM CEILING TRANSFORMS THIS SPACE!

Another view of that stunning ceiling in the living room. WindsorONE precision 16’ Flat Stock S4SSE Trim boards help create those box beam runs. More and more designers are playing up ceilings; it really finishes the room off.

Here’s a visualization of what that room would look like without that trim consideration on the ceiling, quite a difference! Comparisons like these can really help clients visualize what kind of return they can get when they make those investments in trim on their projects.
BOLD COLORS ON THE CEILING – HOW COORDINATING THE TRIM COLOR MAKES IT WORK

We could see above how for this project they went all out on the primary. That doesn’t mean we can’t add drama and interest to the secondary bedrooms. Again, the ceiling was considered, bold color moves are pulled off seamlessly when coordinated with the bold trim details.
*Remember hues will vary from screen to screen.. to really get the color you’re looking for, work with your local pro lumberyard or paint store.

A detail of that secondary bedroom. Personally speaking, every house needs a built-in window bench and secret bookcase door. Moments like these are often missing from new builds.
A LUXE IN-HOME MOVIE THEATER

When the screen is off and there are no windows, what is there to look at? In this next-level, (or should I say 3-level!) in home movie theater, the walls were not an after thought. They used that same shiplap paneling with stiles in rails carried from the bedroom but here in calming blue hue. Strategically placed sconces add lighting drama when discussing all the movie drama that just took place.

CONSIDERING CONTEXT: A STAIRCASE TWO WAYS
When deciding on how to use a trim in a home, it’s important to think about context. Where is your main entertaining happening? When do you want to make an impression and when is the space more private? Above, two staircases from this project. On the left, is in the main entry of the home where the tone is set and you make a strong first impression; the place all your guests will visit. To the right, staircase to the basement, the trim is still bold and defined to stay in character with the rest of the home, not super grand, but still considered. WindsorONE’s Flat Stock S4SSE Trim Boards are also an excellent choice for risers and skirt boards. Have fun with your trim projects!
