Craftsmen Know the Difference: Choose Primed Wood Trim for Your Farmhouse Project

The benefits of choosing primed wood trim for your farmhouse project

Farmhouse stair case, stain grade floor and steps, board and batten white WindsorONE boards on walls

This stunning farmhouse renovation is a case study in material choice and craftsmanship. The wood floors and beams are a way to show off some of the natural splendor of wood’s appearance. The design is helped significantly though by breaking up those natural patterns with WindsorONE primed trim boards for the board and batten walls. It also helps when your builder is Griff Davis Construction, who pulled off this installation flawlessly. This team went above and beyond with their detail to craftsmanship. The pre-planning, the extra thought and care on the way the trim would be installed and the material choices they made, really made this house a home.

Why DO CRAFTSMEN choose primed wood?

Sometimes when choosing materials that are going to be painted, homeowners, builders, designers, may make the wrong assumption that since it’s going to be painted, they can go with the cheapest option. Do not make this mistake! True craftsman choose wood not only because it’s superior to work with particularly when you’re cutting, drilling, shaping the material. It’s an investment in your home as it will last longer than the alternatives. It’s nice when all parties involved on the project agree to go for quality materials. (Even WindsorONE’s Protected Boards with a 30 year warranty can be used on the interior. The Weather Resistance System on Protected Boards limit the ability of the board to absorb moisture; a little something to keep in mind on those bathroom installs.)

All wood boards are not created equal.

Stack of uneven twisted boards compared to need even straight stacks of WindsorONE trim boards

WindsorONE is manufactured in our mills in Surry Virginia and Willits California. Domestic manufacturing gives WindsorONE an advantage quality control; Ensuring each board is straight, tight and true. The primed finger jointed boards provide the board with more precision and straightness over a span than non-finger jointed boards. Additionally it reduces downfall for the lumberyard. Imagine trying to pull 40 straight sticks from the bin on the left. Special shoutout to Truckee-Tahoe Lumber Company for choosing WindsorONE and offering their customers peace of mind.

The Griff Davis team knew to get those stiles on the board and batten walls perfectly clean and even they had to choose a superior trim board. Particularly below when you’re emphasizing the changing raking light over the stair well, any flaws in the boards would stand out like a sore thumb.

Wood Science for a superior trim board

WindsorONE has a unique advantage as a vertically integrated company; there is control over the process from planting the trees to the end manufactured product you find at the pro lumberyard. As a result, when cutting up the log, only the most select cuts of the log are used for WindsorONE trim boards. The rest of the tree is used for other products where precision is not needed. Ultimately, the entire log gets used; it’s a sustainable  forestry operation, ensuring supply and an environmentally friendly operation for generations to come.

Bring nature in; Love those views!

Another key design consideration on this project? Those walls of windows highlighting the trees outside! So many great choices were made on this project; and there is just something harmonious about showcasing the forest outside and using sustainable forest products in the construction.

Modern Farmhouse flat stock moldings with callouts for trim board sizes

Simple Flat Stock Moldings

The trim in this home is another take on S4SSE Trim Board styles. When looking for streamline smooth square moldings look no further than these trim boards. In the layout above modeled on the Griff Davis Construction’s project, there’s a 5/4×8 for the base, 5/4×5 for the casing… and for that nice historical nod, an implied frieze buildup using a 5/4×6 and 1×2 as the cap. It’s another great way to make it your own; here they’ve pared it down and gave it a more modern look by removing side reveals for the stool and cap.

Here to switch things up, they took the same verticals form the board and batten and made a flat panel wall. Breaking the wall up into thirds the reading light sconces land perfectly in the bottom half of the panels. Looking to try a flat panel grid on your project? In the Kitchen: Shiplap backsplash and a pop of color!

Kitchen with blue cabinets and white shiplap backsplash

In the kitchen they went with a vertical shiplap backsplash; creating the perfect lined shadow backdrop for those standout navy cabinets! White counters with brass fixtures and cabinet hardware complete the look. Such a classic timeless palette!

Bay window with shiplap bench and storage built-in

Built-ins complete the home

One of the hallmarks of a beautiful custom home is the built-ins! It’s really a testament to the Designer/Builder that the family’s needs and function of the home was considered. The built-in bench makes that bay window a spot that will truly be enjoyed. The hidden storage panel maximizes the space.. At the height of 3 WORS8 shiplap boards, the bench looks low; but is really just planning for a thick comfy cushion.

Thought full storage continues with the drawers beneath this kitchen nook bench. Shiplap base and back play off the vertical shiplap in the back splash. Hat tip for getting that kitchen table the right size and that compliments the wood used, nicely done.
